Safe holidays - what should you remember?
The winter holidays are a time for relaxation and fun, but also a period when safety should not be forgotten. Whether you are planning a holiday in the mountains, at the seaside or in the city, it is worth preparing well to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Appropriate clothing - the key to comfort and health
Winter conditions can be demanding, so dressing according to the weather is essential. A layered dressing regime will provide optimum protection against the cold while avoiding overheating. Choose thermal clothing, warm jumpers, waterproof jackets and shoes with non-slip soles. Gloves, a hat and a scarf are an absolute must-have!
If you're planning a trip to the mountains, be sure to wear sun goggles and UV sunscreen - snow reflects the sun's rays, which can lead to skin burns.
Planning a holiday with your children? That's what you need to remember!
Safety on the slopes and in the mountains
Skiing and snowboarding are some of the most popular winter activities. To avoid injury, remember a few rules:
- Get the right equipment - Skis, boots and poles should be suitable for your weight, height and ability. If you're unsure, get help from an instructor or rental shop.
- Always wear a helmet - is a must, especially for children.
- Follow the rules on the slopes - keep a safe distance from other skiers and adapt your speed to your ability and the weather conditions.
- Avoid unmarked routes - entering closed trails can end in an accident!
If you are going hiking in the mountains, remember crampons or crampons, trekking poles and a headlamp. Check the weather forecast and don't go out on the trail without letting someone know your plans.
Travelling in winter - how to prepare?
Safe travel is the basis for a successful holiday. If you are going on the road by car, take care of a few things:
- Winter tyres - provide better grip and shorter braking distances.
- Operating fluids - check the oil level, washer fluid level and battery condition.
- Snow chains - may be necessary in some areas.
- Emergency kit - A first aid kit, starter cables, torch and blanket can prove invaluable in the event of problems along the route.
When travelling by train or bus, remember to be careful on slippery platforms and bus stops. It is also a good idea to carry a warm drink and snacks in case of delays.
Health and first aid
Regardless of where you spend your holidays, take care of your health. Here are some tips:
- Remember to hydrate - despite the cool temperatures, the body still needs an adequate amount of fluids.
- Be careful on the ice - Slippery pavements, frozen lakes and rivers can be a serious hazard.
- Have a basic first aid kit with you - Patches, painkillers and preparations for frostbite may prove useful.
Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the effects of the cold, so pay special attention to them. In case of symptoms of frostbite or hypothermia (shivering, disorientation, pale skin), call for help immediately.
